Review by Booklist Review

Even with the advent of thinking machines that sew, there is still time and space for stitching by hand, whether for purely functional or for decorative reasons. Rowan fully endorses hand stitching, as shown in her encyclopedic coverage of the craft. No mere reference tome, this book features all possible how-to's, from tools and interfacing to hems and mistake correcting, but it also and this will please beginners details more than 70 stitches needed for these extraordinary activities. Each stitch is explained by level of difficulty, tools and materials needed, and best uses; and color step-by-step photographs augment the text. The last section (the fourth chapter) is strictly for inspiring readers' imaginations: twentysomething pages of ready-to-trace patterns (flowers and leaves, butterflies and insects, the nursery, the seashore, and six other topics), along with instructions.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2010 Booklist

Review by Library Journal Review

Rowan, an experienced sewist and sewing instructor, brings her love of handwork to the page in this encyclopedic collection of handsewing stitches and techniques. The stitches are divided into functional and decorative, with functional stitches including such useful ones as hem stitches, buttonhole stitches, basting, and tailor's tacks. Decorative techniques include basic hand embroidery stitches such as stem stitch and cross-stitch, as well as basic needlepoint and crewel embroidery stitches. Each entry includes a full-color spread with step-by-step directions (including photographs for each step) and close-up views of each completed stitch. Plenty of useful advice regarding needle, thread, and fabric selection is also included. VERDICT Thorough, comprehensive, and useful, this deserves a place on every sewist's shelf.
