Review by Library Journal Review

A Japanese regiment lays down its arms in Burma at the end of World War II, but a harp-playing private who's been traumatized by combat becomes a Buddhist monk and stays behind to bury the dead. With its mellifluous score, Kon Ichikawa's antiwar film poignantly shows the salutary effect of music on defeated soldiers. The director revisits the war with the jointly released Fires on the Plain (ISBN 1-934121-28-2. $29.95) about one soldier's plunge into degradation after being refused medical aid. Both titles are recommended for most collections. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
