Sometimes all it takes to go from grumpy to groovy is the right accessory. Pete the Cat is grumpy. In fact, he has never been so grumpy. That is, until Grumpy Toad shows him his cool, blue magic sunglasses, and suddenly everything is all right again. Pete the Cat shows all the other animals that their bad days can be changed just by putting on the sunglasses, too. But what will happen when the sunglasses break? Pete's latest adventure proves quite uplifting and contains all of the catchy repetition that readers have come to expect. The illustrations work very well with the text as the background turns from blue to bright, sunny orange as each character tries on the glasses. Pair with Cheer Up, Mouse (2013) for a storytime on chasing the blues away.--Erickson, Tiffany Copyright 2014 Booklist

PreS-Gr 1-Pete the Cat feels blue until Toad shares his "Cool, Blue, Magic sunglasses" that make birds sing, skies brighten, and the sun shine. He rides his skateboard down the sidewalk and encounters animal friends along the way who are also feeling unhappy or grumpy. He shares his glasses with Squirrel, Turtle, and Alligator to improve their moods, too, until he hits a crack in the sidewalk and his glasses go flying. Wise Old Owl reminds Pete that it doesn't take glasses to make him see things positively; he can find the good in every day on his own. Though fans of the feline may find this story less engaging than the earlier ones, the charming folk-style illustrations reflect the mood of the characters. An animated version of the story is available through the publisher's website.-Lindsay Persohn, University of South Florida, Tampa (c) Copyright 2014. A pair of "COOL, BLUE, MAGIC sunglasses" help Pete the cat "see things in a whole new way." As he rolls along on his skateboard with his new attitude, he encounters three friends, each of whom needs the sunglasses' magic. The glasses break, but an owl reminds him "to look for the good in every day." The bright, sunshiny illustrations enhance the repetitive text. (c) Copyright 2014.
