Review by Library Journal Review

The iconic detective uses his unparalleled skills of observation and deduction to solve the strangest conundrums of murder, theft, greed, and intrigue while his faithful chronicler, Dr. Watson, imparts the details. Rarely predictable, this assemblage of tales spans four decades and offers narratives ranging from the straightforward mystery filled with clues to unravel to crime stories and character studies. Simon Vance expertly voices the stalwart Dr. Watson and the large cast of characters, including the eccentric and often boastful Sherlock Holmes and a host of quirky villains and victims. With just the right combination of easily discernible voices and perfectly varied pacing, Vance makes these tales accessible to readers of all ages while capturing the feel of Victorian England and the subsequent time periods of later works. Especially because of the renewed popularity of Holmes stories fueled by a major motion picture franchise and several popular British and American television series, fans both old and new will relish the original source material from which these newer offerings are derived. VERDICT An essential purchase for any library whose patrons are fans of mysteries and crime and of the good detective himself. Even libraries that own other audio versions of the Holmes stories will not want to miss this treat for the ear and mind.
