In Coble's (Tidewater Inn; Rosemary Cottage) latest historical novel set in turn-of-the-20th-century Texas, danger lurks around every petticoat and suit jacket. Lily and her beau, Andy, barely escape a house fire that claims their fathers' lives. In the aftermath, Andy disappears, leaving Lily and her mother to struggle until her mother's death a few years later. Alone and forced to find a post, Lily lands a job as a kitchen maid at the Butterfly Palace in Austin. To her dismay, she encounters Andy, now using the name Drew, at a dinner party there. He begs her not to reveal his identity. Lily is awash in new grief at the memories of his abandonment. Furthermore, Belle, the mistress of the house, has her eyes set on Drew as a future husband. Meanwhile, a killer is targeting servant girls. VERDICT This story about the importance of having faith, especially in your darkest hour, is recommended for fans of Amanda Quick and Sandra Brown and for readers who enjoy romantic suspense and historical fiction.
