Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-8-In this thorough and well-designed handbook, artists are encouraged to explore four types of painting through more than 45 projects ranging from the wholly original to reproductions of well-known works. Introductory information on the properties of each medium is given on basic color palettes and the variety of materials required, such as brushes, knives, paper, and canvas. In addition, many different techniques are provided for each medium. The projects are presented in a consistent, clear format with high-quality photographs corresponding to each step. Relevant skills are introduced logically and with increasing complexity, acquainting readers with concepts such as paper stretching and canvas preparation, color mixing, working with thumbnails, and techniques for transferring sketches to canvas. Brief information on certain movements, works, or artists is interspersed throughout with references for readers to find more information. This attractive guide is well planned and easy to follow. Of special note is the great variety of styles provided, including Pop Art, Pointillism, mosaic, color washing, and impasto. The book could be used quite effectively with both the very young and more mature, adult painters. Much is included in this tome, making it a great title for beginners and a nice refresher for experienced painters. Without a doubt, it's a worthy addition to any art collection.-Rebecca Gueorguiev, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
