Magpies, homebodies, and nomads A modern knitter's guide to discovering and exploring style

Cirilia Rose

Book - 2014

Cirilia Rose is the epitome of the new knitwear designer--young, educated, curious, and excited to share her passion for all ideas knit and purl. Her attitude toward curating her own collection of designs is informed as much by travel, cultural history, and tried-and-true sourcebooks as it is by modern media and technology. In Magpies, Homebodies, and Nomads, Rose takes readers behind the scenes of her design process, showing them how she curates and organizes ideas and translates them into knitwear designs. Through 25 projects that fall into three categories--Magpies (accessories for the small amounts of precious yarns that knitters inevitably collect), Homebodies (garments for time spent close to home), and Nomads (garments to wear when v...enturing out into the world)--Rose shares her modern aesthetic and invites readers to develop their own.

Review by Library Journal Review

Well-known knitwear designer Rose explores her myriad inspirations in this collection of 25 fashionable knitting projects that show the potential in beautiful yarn. Rose divides her projects into three categories-magpies, for projects that use the small bits of yarn that many knitters collect over the years; homebodies, for projects intended to evoke the comforts of home; and nomads, for projects that draw inspiration from street style, both American and international. The designs are fashionable yet accessible and there's a pleasing blend of accessories and garments. Standouts include the charming studio pullover, which incorporates unspun, curly locks of wool as a heart-shaped motif on a sweater, and the sophisticated loro vest, which features a combination of cables, lace, and moss stitch. VERDICT Rose has an engaging and unusual point of view. Unlike many knitting writers, her narrative sections are as interesting as her patterns-and the styling and photographs are marvelous.
