Review by Booklist Review

Spilsbury offers a take-charge how-to manual that fulfills the increasing demand for resources to combat the challenges of adolescent interpersonal relationships. It begins with a general definition of what bullying is (and is not) and explores causes of such behaviors. It also tackles timely issues such as cyberbullying and the problems that social media can exacerbate. The crux of the book, however, is strategies for making oneself bully-proof through relevant, applicable, and practical suggestions. Spilsbury discusses taking control, assertive behaviors, and the power of surrounding oneself with positive peers, while a situational quiz helps readers practice these coping strategies. The book also explains how to decide when bullying crosses the line into abuse and how to get help from trusted adults. Gordon's illustrations are cartoonish, appealing, and fun, and a list of websites and hotlines is included in the appendix. Offering a message of resilience and hope, this is a valuable resource on an immensely hot issue.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2010 Booklist
