It's November of 1962, and Bruce Reynolds is gathering a group of men together with the intent of robbing a Royal Mail train bound for London from Glasgow. The gang holds a practice robbery in the London Heathrow Airport to see if they're ready, and then, on August 8, 1963, they rob the train of over Đ2.6 million. Six of Scotland Yard's finest police officers are called in to investigate the case, determined to not only recover the stolen money, but also to put away the masterminds.

Based on actual events, this television drama focuses on the August 8, 1963, robbery of more than L 2.6 million from the Glasgow to London Royal Mail train, setting off a string of events that the 15-man gang of South London career criminals could not have anticipated. The program is smartly presented in two parts: "A Robber's Tale" follows the planning and execution of the largest unarmed robbery in British history, while "A Copper's Tale" recounts the investigation, the manhunt, and the sentencing. The large cast includes Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6) as the crime's calculating strategist and veteran actor Jim Broadbent as the Scotland Yard detective driven to bring the thieves to justice.
