Review by School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 1-Keeping children safe is a key concern for parents and teachers, and this production addresses this important topic in a way that empowers children instead of scaring them. The upbeat music, original cartoons, practical crafts, and music videos make learning about safety fun and memorable. Segments cover a range of different topics, and young viewers will learn how to stay safe in a variety of situations. Lessons include telling the difference between an "uh-oh" feeling and an "it's okay" feeling and checking with an adult before doing anything unexpected, as well as why it's important to keep private parts private, why kids should not get in a car with a stranger, and how to be the boss of your own body. The video offers important tips, such as knowing one's parents' full names and phone numbers and what to do when lost. The program stars Ruby, an upbeat host who possesses a hint of magic, and a group of children who visit her studio. A variety of ethnicities are represented in the music videos and interview segments. Overall, this production will be a refreshing asset to health and safety units, and guidance counselors will find it useful as well.-Anne Bozievich, Friendship Elementary School, Glen Rock, PA (c) Copyright 2014.
