Knitting double Mastering the two-color technique with over 30 reversible projects

Anja Belle, 1972-

Book - 2014

"Knitting double, also known as double knitting, is a technique by which knitters can create two fabrics at the same time, and this guidebook includes step-by-step instructions with photographs to help master this method. Crafters learn how the front and back are knitted simultaneously and the stitches are worked in pairs. While the "right side" of the fabric normally faces outward, and the "wrong side" faces the inside of the work, double knitting creates the illusion of a fabric with no wrong side. More than 30 projects are included, beginning with basic patterns and simpler projects, such as hats or scarves, and moving into the more complex, such as mittens, potholders, and even cell phone cozies. This book is th...e perfect resource for the intermediate to advanced knitter looking to expand their repertoire" --

Review by Library Journal Review

For all its complexities, double knitting has its advantages, as knitter Belle mentions in the foreword to this collection of accessory and home-decor patterns. Specifically, no rolling edges, no wrong side, and no weaving in of ends-the bane of all knitters who enjoy colorwork. That said, it's not the easiest technique to master, and it requires a good deal of patience to learn. Belle's style leans toward the bright and bold, with graphic geometric shapes alongside traditional motifs such as Scandinavian stars and fleurs-de-lis, and simple pictures also feature prominently in her designs. The construction of most of the accessories is simple-lots of scarves and hats, which are the perfect canvas for double knitting. The colorwork charts are on a poster-sized pull-out in the back of the book, and if that disappears, the work loses much of its usefulness-something that selectors should consider before purchasing. VERDICT There aren't a lot of books focused on double-knitting patterns, so advanced knitters will embrace this collection. Knitters who are new to the technique may want to start with Alasdair Post-Quinn's Extreme Double-Knitting, which gives a comprehensive overview of basic double-knitting practices.
