The little free library book

Margret Aldrich, 1975-

Book - 2015

In 2009, Todd Bol built the first Little Free Library as a memorial to his mom. Five years later, this simple idea to promote literacy and encourage community has become a movement. Little Free Libraries-freestanding front-yard book exchanges-now number twenty thousand in seventy countries. The Little Free Library Book tells the history of these charming libraries, gathers quirky and poignant firsthand stories from owners, provides a resource guide for how to best use your Little Free Library, and features color images of the most creative and inspired LFLs around.

Review by Library Journal Review

Todd Boll began the Little Free Library movement with the goal of building 2,510 libraries, one more than Andrew -Carnegie. In just over five years, the campaign has inspired over 25,000 libraries worldwide. Aldrich (former editor, Utne Reader) pays homage to this movement and the individuals who have fostered its development. Well-chosen vignettes demonstrate how the movement not only promotes literacy but produces a sense of community and offers creative outlets for library designers. Interested readers will learn how to fund, build, stock, and curate their own library, as well as discover tips on overcoming challenges. The cover images encourage the reader to peek inside the book, just as their real-life counterparts inspire passers-by to stop and see what treasures the little library might contain. The myriad photos show the love of books and that reading knows no boundaries. VERDICT Lovers of books and libraries will adore this title, as will readers interested in folk art or successful grassroots movements. Be warned, Little Free Libraries are sure to spring up wherever this book is available.-Lydia Olszak, Bosler Memorial Lib., Carlisle, PA © Copyright 2015.
