Gr 4 Up-This attractive, striking look at the adventures of the Viking world will quickly draw readers in. The author has drawn upon a journal belonging to his late grandfather Tom MacLeod, who lived along the Scottish coastline and who was convinced that there was a Viking burial site in the area, and who attempted to locate it himself. Through time lines, maps, and diagrams-and Tom's actual diary excerpts-the author relies upon engaging language to describe Viking battles, everyday life, and villages. Students will be fascinated by the stories of Eric Bloodaxe, ruler of the Viking kingdom of Northumbria; the legends and lore of the gods and goddesses; and the fall of the Vikings with the coming of the Normans.
