Review by Library Journal Review

The work of artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) is captured in this exhibition catalog from the collections of Paris's Centre Pompidou and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Lampe (curator of modern art, Ctr. Pompidou) and Roberts (chief curator, Milwaukee Art Museum) each contribute an essay. Over 100 works of Kandinsky's paintings, prints, and drawings are included. The catalog also provides highlights such as pieces from the artist's early years in Munich and his work at the Bauhaus. The material is organized by theme, from "The Beginnings in Munich, 1896-1908" to "Murnau and the Blue Rider, 1908-1914" to "Kandinsky in Paris 1933-1944." Chapters include a time line of the artist's most notable accomplishments, an introductory essay, images of his work, and descriptions of some of his plates. The majority of images are in color, with black-and-white ones mostly of the artist. Readers will have a thorough understanding and appreciation of the life and work of Kandinsky after reading this attractively presented volume. VERDICT Recommended for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and scholars studying art and art history, and anyone interested in learning about Kandinsky and art in general.-Tina Chan, SUNY Oswego (c) Copyright 2014.
