K-Gr 2-This early reader presents a superpowered option for dealing with bullies. Though children looking for freeze rays or bat-a-rangs are sorely out of luck, this playground superhero is not without his charms. Donning his tights anytime a bully is present, Zach jumps into action to not only save the sad victim but also offer advice. Colorful bolded text outlines Zach's super advice with quips like "no hurting others," "everyone can play," or "no calling names" as he encounters each bully. Illustrations are neither distracting or particularly dynamic as they carry the story along. They do, however, depict a diverse group of characters, which strengthens the idea that this is a message for everyone. A solid and brief topical introduction to bullying that will speak to most young readers without causing stress or upset. VERDICT A suitable selection for collections needing antibullying material for this reading level.-Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI © Copyright 2015. This timely easy-reader series illustrates applicable ways for kids to deal with bullies, from standing up for friends (On-Again) to being yourself (Go, Billy). Relatable situations and mostly realistic dialogue help make the purposeful character-building stories go down easy. Each book's illustrations are bright and story-appropriate. "Big Questions" ("Why was Bear being mean to the others?") and "Big Words" (brief glossaries) are appended. [Review covers these Funny Bone Readers titles: Bear's Bad Day, Go, Billy, Go!, How to Deal with Bullies, The On-Again, Off-Again Friend, Stella...Almost, and The Fable of the Bully Dragon.] (c) Copyright 2016.
