Stanley the hamster runs a diner, where he cooks breakfast and lunch for customers and even bakes a birthday cake for a young friend. After washing a sinkful of dishes, this amiable fellow heads for home. Time for supper! Time for a bath! And time for bed! Goodnight, Stanley. The short, matter-of-fact text tells just enough about what's happening while leaving plenty of space for kids to ask questions and point out what they find in the illustrations. Bold, black lines define the appealing characters and settings, while areas of color shine brightly against the white backgrounds. Clarity and simplicity are the hallmarks of the Stanley the Hamster series, a well-designed British import that debuted in the U.S. with Stanley the Builder (2014) and Stanley's Garage (2014) and continued with Stanley the Farmer (2015). These picture books have steadily gained a following among young children, who respond to the capable protagonist, his dependable daily routine, and his varied career choices.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2015 Booklist

PreS-Gr 1-Another addition to the series, Stanley's Diner follows another busy day at the diner, where Stanley and his friend Hattie cook up eggs, pancakes, and even a special cake for Little Woo's birthday. Of course, when the day is done, everything must be cleaned up so Stanley can return home and rest for the evening. Bee's familiar hamster is always on the go and is a jack of all trades. These books are great for building young children's literacy skills, as the text asks engaging questions, leading readers to the answer on the next page. The illustrations are clear and helpful rather than distracting for young readers. Items in the illustrations are clearly labeled, making connections for beginning readers. Stanley's new story line of working in the kitchen will appeal to any preschooler who plays house or pretends to cook. In Stanley's (Stanley's Garage, etc.) latest ultra-mellow offering, the hamster goes about a typical day at his diner and then jazzes things up by "baking a special cake. Who could it be for?" The low-key plotting, squarish format, and thickly outlined illustrations in flat colors favorably recall Lucy Cousins's books about mouse Maisy, who may have met in Stanley her congenial match.
