Feathers

Jorge Corona

Book - 2015

Born covered in black feathers, abandoned as a baby in the slums of the Maze, Poe has lived his entire eleven-year-old life hidden away under the protection of his adoptive father, Gabriel. He spends his days secretly helping the Mice, bands of orphans who roam the slums, but there is a whisper of an altogether more sinister figure in the shadows, making street children disappear. When Bianca, an over-protected girl from the wealthy City beyond the Wall, escapes into the Maze in search of adventure, their worlds collide. As danger looms on all sides, a friendship grows between the city girl and the boy covered in feathers, a friendship that may just be enough to bring Bianca home, and lead Poe to his destiny.

Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-6-Poe is a feathered boy who has grown up in the shadows of the Maze, a crowded set of streets that border a great city. His guardian found him in the streets as an infant and seeks to shelter him from the stares and cruelty of others. Poe spends his days sneaking about the cityscape as he attempts to help the other Mice, or children who run through the streets. He does not have a friend in the world besides his guardian until he comes face to face with the daughter of a captain. Bianca has escaped her chaperones during a trip outside her majestic city's walls, and together she and Poe forge a friendship that attempts to knock down the wall between their worlds and discover the truth about Poe's shadowy and secret past. The story is enthralling and will capture the hearts and imaginations of readers. Poe is a true underdog hero, and Bianca's wish to be set free from her restricting life is something to which middle grades readers can relate. Stunning illustrations contrast the stark white orderly city with the dark and dangerous Maze, making this graphic novel a true pleasure to read. Action and danger are presented without an abundance of violence and gore, which makes this a standout choice for middle grade audiences. VERDICT A gem that should find a place in all intermediate and middle school graphic novel collections.-Carli Worthman, Carmel Middle School, Carmel, IN © Copyright 2016.
