Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-5-Fourth grade is turning out to be harder than Waylon expected. All he wants to do is come up with awesome science experiments and write about them in his new journal. Instead, he's fretting about the teams that his classmate Arlo is dividing all the boys into. He's also anxious about scary Baxter Bolen, who just moved back to town. Then there's Waylon's sister. She changed her name and now wears only black. Readers of the author's "Clementine" series will recognize Waylon as one of Clementine's classmates and will enjoy her cameo appearance in this title. Pennypacker does a nice job of capturing the worry and fun that come with being a fourth grader. Christopher Gebauer narrates nicely, though his voice could use more differentiation among characters. Listeners may want a copy of the book as well so they can enjoy Marla Frazee's illustrations. VERDICT A must-listen for those missing Clementine. ["Waylon is an appealing everykid whose passion for science just might spark readers' curiosity as he contemplates ideas from angstroms to alien hand syndrome": SLJ 1/16 starred review of the Hyperion book.]-Elizabeth Elsbree, Krug Elementary School, Aurora, IL © Copyright 2016.
