Polar regions

The books in the Research on the Edge series introduce readers to science labs and research taking place in extreme environments. The book for each location covers the projects under way there, examining the topics of study, findings, and impacts of the research. Further details provide insight into specialized equipment, specific dangers, and related issues, often including climate change. Polar Regions emphasizes the importance of polar ice and introduces research on animals, including penguins, seals, and polar bears; researchers' lives in the extreme cold and sun are also described. Although the concepts and vocabulary are sophisticated, the books look and read a bit young for the intended middle-school audience.
