Unlikely Friendships: Dogs brings together twenty-seven new stories of canine kindness and courage, plus a handful of classic tales involving dogs from Unlikely Friendships, Unlikely Loves, and Unlikely Heroes. Meet Rex, a Belgian Malinois who learned to love and trust again through the improbable friendship of a goose. Popeye the Mastiff, who ran into a burning stable and saved seventeen terrified horses by nibbling at their hooves. And a ...pit bull named Dolly, whose antics with her best friend, Sheldon the tortoise, include games of tag. (Yes, picture a tortoise running after a dog!) Review by Library Journal Review

This new book from the best-selling "Unlikely" series by nature and science writer Holland (Unlikely Loves: 43 Heartwarming True Stories from the Animal Kingdom; Unlikely Heroes: 37 Inspiring Stories of Courage and Heart from the Animal Kingdom) celebrates the special bond formed between some special dogs and other species. From a mastiff named Popeye who saved horses from a burning barn to a pit bull named Dolly who befriended and played daily with an aged tortoise, these 37 examples (nine were reprinted from earlier editions) help us to appreciate the depths of generosity and freedom of spirit that many dogs exhibit. While most stories involve interspecies interactions, several describe therapy dogs specially trained to assist humans who have cognitive, physical, or emotional issues; there's even a story about Whizz, a Newfoundland who has saved nine drowning swimmers, so far! Dog lovers will enjoy browsing through this sweet, beautifully photographed title. The format invites readers to dip in and read the brief essays-and, in fact, would be lovely to read aloud to a classroom as well. Verdict This lightweight coffee-table book will elicit broad smiles from dog lovers and photography fans. For all ages.-Susan Riley, Mamaroneck P.L., NY © Copyright 2016.
