At first, the advice of professors and coauthors (The Leadership Challenge, 1987) Kouzes and Posner is a bit confusing: they reference the five essential practices great leaders must demonstrate, from role modeling to emotional appeal. But that's not exactly what this book is all about. Rather, they've produced a how-to motivational tome and done so with short chapters, plenty of concrete examples, and action/coaching steps at the end of each section. Their five fundamentals are deceptively easy: believe you can, aspire to excel, challenge yourself, engage support, and practice deliberately. Yet without convincing statistics and personal stories, these five would disappear from any executive's to-do list simply because each must be practiced daily. Plus, the details for each of the five fundamentals will drive clarity and commitment. Engagement of support, as one example, is achieved by asking for help, showing empathy, looking for positive role models, and requesting feedback first.
