Review by Booklist Review

Science writer Quammen, a Carnegie Medal for Excellence finalist for Spillover (2012), begins the written portion of this neatly scaled, photograph-filled, and awareness-raising volume with an overview of the natural and human history of Yellowstone, America's first national park, a site that will host more than four million visitors during the centennial of the founding of the National Park Service. Quammen takes readers up in a small plane for an eagle-view of the magnificently diverse landscape, then dives into the paradox of the cultivated wild. He details the many interrelated concerns that must be addressed in the ongoing effort to maintain the park's habitats and wildlife, including its iconic bison and elk, grizzlies and wolves, and only native trout, the cutthroat, while keeping humans safe and in awe. Going forward, Yellowstone will face challenges not only within the park but also in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Everything is connected, Quammen reminds us, from nematode worms to moose to trumpeter swans to aspens to mule deer to people, and our cultivation efforts must be judicious, humble, and wise. --Seaman, Donna Copyright 2016 Booklist
