UI student Steve Smith (1944-2009) encountered violence as a civil rights worker in Mississippi, led a hunger strike in downtown Iowa City, and burned his draft card in the Iowa Memorial Union in protest of the escalating war in Vietnam - all before his 21st birthday. University archivist David McCartney recounts Smith's life and efforts in the UI Archives to document his ideals and his struggles.
