*Starred Review* Bonney is the originator of a robust online gathering for women, Design*Sponge. Some 40 percent of all U.S. businesses are run by women. Based on that (and other forces), Bonney has identified 100 famous and nearly so women who are makers, artists, and entrepreneurs. Pictures (of them and their works) punctuate the interviews, many of which use the same questions with amazingly different answers: the biggest sacrifice you've made, your favorite thing about your work space, best piece of business advice, what success means. Among the global representatives: a Milan-based illustrator, a London tattoo artist, model and businesswoman Christy Turlington Burns, architect Maya Lin, TV host Carla Hall. And just a few of the shareable quotes: Live kind; your work will show it; The world needs more gratitude and less narcissism; and Being prolific is necessary to being professionally successful. This is the ultimate repository for quotable quotes from women. It's the spark of a larger, more universal community for female entrepreneurs. And it acts as a source of inspiration for anyone, regardless of gender, who's running a business, or thinking about it.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2016 Booklist

Inspired by the talent and entrepreneurial spirit of individuals she met through her work, Bonney, founder of the website Design*Sponge (designsponge.com), highlights women across the globe who have overcome adversity to start their own creative businesses. Interviewees, including writer Tavi Gevinson, designer Maya Lin, actress Issa Rae, and poet Nikki Giovanni, represent all walks of life, launching careers in various industries, from fashion houses and restaurants to arts organizations and academia. Each tells of her favorite aspects of the workspace, the lessons she's learned, the force that keeps her going, and her observations of the world at large. VERDICT An excellent source of inspiration for women (and men) of all ages. © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
