A little mouse lives alone in the woods. For companionship, he has only the moon, and their conversations are entirely one-sided. Wondering if the moon can't hear him, the mouse runs toward it until he's far from home, but the moon never seems any closer until he finds it reflected in a pool of water. When the mouse speaks, a voice answers, and they converse happily throughout the night, until the moon's reflection fades at dawn, and he discovers that a tiny fish has become his friend. This pleasing tale unfolds in a simply written, amiable narrative and expressive illustrations. The forest scenes at night look bleak and still, with moonlit shapes of black, leafless trees looking angular and stark against the white backgrounds. Painted in tawny shades, the mouse and fish show up brightly within scenes that are relatively colorless until day breaks and the two friends discover what viewers already know. With its appealing story and pictures that communicate well from a distance, this picture book is a natural for sharing with groups of children.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2016 Booklist

PreS-Gr 1-A mouse sets off to find the moon in this calming picture book. The lonely rodent, living by himself in the woods, has only the moon for a friend. Unfortunately, while he talks to the orb every night, the moon never responds. One night, "the little mouse wonder[s] if maybe the moon [is] just too far away to hear him." He decides to go on an adventure and locate it. After a long journey that causes the mouse some anxiety, he finally discovers the moon in a pond. The two begin talking and spend the whole night sharing stories. Unbeknownst to the mouse, under the moon's reflection there is a small fish who cannot see the mouse and also believes he is talking to the moon. As daylight arrives, the moon starts to disappear and the fish and mouse finally meet. The quiet text is a wonderful match for the pen, ink, and watercolor illustrations. The pen lines in the surrounding forest and pond are beautiful and further promote the sense of peace this offering presents. VERDICT This title is perfect for one-on-one sharing at bedtime. For a quiet storytime involving the moon, consider pairing it with Kevin Henkes's Kitten's First Full Moon.-Brooke Newberry, La Crosse Public Library, WI © Copyright 2016. A mouse talks to the moon every night, but he never gets an answer, so he sets off to find the moon. The mouse discovers the moon's reflection, and beneath, a fish who becomes a real friend. The eye-catching illustrations--almost exclusively in black and white--evoke profound loneliness, but there is light--and color--for the new friends at the end of this appealing story.
