Review by Library Journal Review

This semibiographical documentary chronicles the life and achievements of modernist architect Eero Saarinen (1910-61). Unlike more personal films such as Nathaniel Kahn's My Architect, about his father, architect Louis Kahn, this PBS documentary, as told by the subject's son, Eric, focuses on the extraordinary achievements of the prodigious Finnish American modernist genius who produced the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the TWA terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Washington Dulles International Airport, and furniture like the tulip chair and other furnishings designed with Charles Eames. Interviews and testimony from architects and critics such as Kevin Roche, Cesar Pelli, Robert A.M. Stern, and Paul Goldberger help to establish Saarinen's work. Also featured are archival interviews with Saarinen and his second wife, New York Times art critic Aline Saarinen, who was instrumental during their marriage and after his death in promoting and preserving his legacy. -VERDICT An important addition to collections on 20th-century modernist art, design, and -architecture.-Herbert E.
