Few archaeological discoveries have generated as much popular buzz as the uncovering of King Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922 by Howard Carter. Using a dynamic two-page layout, a foldout, and colorful images that fill every inch, this book discusses almost every aspect of King Tut's life and times. The age of pharaohs is given context by an overview of the politics of the Egyptian kingdom and their conflicts with other lands. Construction of pyramids is discussed in detail, showing cross-sections of the maze of tunnels within each, and the science behind mummification, and the religious justification for the practice, is thoroughly examined. Historiography is explored, as readers learn about when and how scholars experienced a renewed interest in Egypt. A computer app, available for free download, takes users on a virtual tour of the tomb. Egyptology is a perennially popular topic, and this book is replete with photographs of material artifacts, providing hours of pleasure reading on a high-interest subject.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2016 Booklist

Gr 4-6-Based on the title, readers expecting to read only about Tutankhamen's tomb, its history-making discovery, and the splendors within may be disappointed-but they shouldn't be. The volume is filled with clear, explanatory prose and exceptional color photos. Helpful captions provide basic background information about ancient Egypt, including hieroglyphics, pyramids, daily life, mummies, gods and religion, and burial customs. Thus, this volume offers some necessary, important facts and historical context that lead up to the story, covered in the second half, of Howard Carter's extraordinary discovery of the boy king's tomb and its breathtaking treasures, only some of which are on display here. A free downloadable 3-D app is available, which will help interested students and browsers to explore the tomb more thoroughly and gain further insights. Certainly, this topic has been the subject of many works, but for readers who aren't very familiar with the narrative surrounding Tut's tomb, this is a good, simple introduction; even without the app, it should whet appetites for further reading on this fascinating subject. VERDICT A fine addition to public and school collections; hand to Tut fans and browsers, and use as supplemental material in units on ancient Egypt.-Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY © Copyright 2016.
