Jonathan Maberry

Book - 2017

In the spring of 1979, fifteen-year-old Dana Scully is the new girl at school in Craiger, Maryland. But worse than that, her dreams -- some of which, in the past, came true -- have become more vivid and disturbing, and are haunted by a shadowy figure which could be an angel -- or the devil. When a classmate who recently died in a car accident appears in Dana's dreams, she begins to investigate, uncovering more suspicious deaths. With the evidence mounting, she must face the dangerous knowledge that evil is real.

Review by Booklist Review

Cult-favorite TV show The X-Files is getting the YA treatment with a pair of novels about the agents' teenage years. In this one, Maberry tells the tale of young Dana Scully, who's just moved to a small Maryland town that has seen a suspicious spike in teenage deaths. The police are sure the deaths are all alcohol- or drug-related, but Dana's not so sure, since she's been having intense visions of those teens being murdered in ritualistic ways. She can't ignore her otherworldly experiences, unusual as they are, but a smart, cute boy in her class is skeptical and encourages her to look for more concrete, science-based connections. For fans of agent Scully's no-nonsense, rational adult character in the TV series, teenage Scully, drawn to new-age religion and ESP, might be a bit of a disappointment, but the cinematic pacing, interwoven scenes from the killer's perspective, and hints of a larger conspiracy may draw in fans of paranormal mysteries. A simultaneous release by Kami Garcia, Agent of Chaos, presents Fox Mulder's story.--Hunter, Sarah Copyright 2017 Booklist
