Why does Peanut think outside the litter box? How can I get Lizzie to stop scratching my chairs? And why do Ruckus and Agatha sleep so much? The answers to these and other vexing questions about our cuddly, comedic, cute, and often confounding cat companions can be found in Johnson-Bennett's comprehensive guide to all things feline. From one's first free to a good home kitten to the senior, shelter-rescue cat, every life stage, home circumstance, health concern, and behavioral crisis is addressed in straightforward, compassionate, and from-experience terms. Hissing, purring, chewing, clawing: there's a reason why cats do what they do and don't do what their humans wish they would. When so much of their conduct seems incomprehensible and, worse, uncorrectable, cats can suffer inappropriate care from their human caregivers, resulting in neglect, abandonment, or a one-way trip to the local shelter. Yet it doesn't have to be that way. With a 30-year career as a feline behavior consultant to her credit, Johnson-Bennett's advice is truly the cat's meow.--Haggas, Carol Copyright 2016 Booklist

Cat owners often wonder or stress over why their furry friends do things like dip their paws in water instead of drinking directly from a bowl or suddenly stop using the litter box. Feline behavior consultant Johnson--Bennett (Think Like a Cat) explains the "whys" in her answers to 150 common questions owners have asked over her 30-year career. Along with best solutions for behavior issues are ways to prevent problems from coming up in the first place in order to improve cat-human relationships. Organized into sections including "Stinking Outside the Box," "Boot Camp," "Fraidy Cat," and "Party Animal," a wide range of topics is covered. The author sensibly advises owners to always first be sure the cat doesn't have health issues before assuming there's a behavioral problem. Another cat guide to consult is Mieshelle Nagelschneider's The Cat Whisperer, which includes her C.A.T. behavior modification plan. VERDICT Written in a conversational tone that is both enjoyable and educational along with the clear Q&A format, this book will attract readers wishing to understand their little companions better.-Eva Lautemann, formerly with -Georgia Perimeter Coll.
