Review by Booklist Review

This companion volume to Pitamic and Laidlaw's Modern Art Adventures (2015) introduces works of art and uses them as inspiration for creating three-dimensional art projects. Within thematic chapters such as Early Sculpture, Modern Sculpture, Installation, Ceramics, Collage, and Textiles, the authors discuss a few artworks that are shown in full-page photos. Each piece becomes the jumping-off point for two projects that kids can carry out on their own or with a little help. For example, Louise Bourgeois' sculpture Maman, a 30-foot spider housed at the Tate Modern, inspires a model spider made of clay and pipe cleaners, as well as a woven web created with cardboard and yarn. The choice of art, clean design, and excellent photos give the book a relatively sophisticated look, while the projects themselves are not too difficult for young people, especially with small photos accompanying the step-by-step instructions. While a few of the chosen artists (Picasso, Oldenburg) are well known, the others (Weiwei, Whiteread) are seldom represented in children's books. This sturdy paperback is a handsome resource for art enthusiasts.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2016 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

The team behind Modern Art Adventures returns with another excellent collection of art projects, this time drawn from 18 works of sculptural or otherwise 3-D artwork. Six chapters address sculpture, installations, ceramics, collage, and textiles; projects include Louise Bourgeois-inspired spiders made from clay and pipe cleaners, a pair of projects that riff on Boccioni's Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, and a woven wall hanging that takes its cue from Bauhaus textile artist Gunta Stölz. Context about the artists and their movements is incorporated throughout. Like its predecessor, it's a book that succeeds for its ambition and breadth as it helps brings art out of the museum and makes it immediate and relevant in the lives of readers. Ages 6-up.
