Review by Booklist Review

DK presents the history of art from prehistory to today in 100 artworks. The book is arranged chronologically and divided into six sections, each beginning with a time line and overview of major themes. In Context boxes situate each work within art history as well as within a particular art movement, style, or technique. The book is lavishly illustrated with full-color reproductions and infographics. Portfolios at the end of each section describe an additional 150 works. Although the majority of the examples are from Western art, an effort is made to provide a global perspective. Ideal for quick reference or for the layperson with an interest in art and art history, The Art Book is recommended for most public and school libraries.--Harmon, Lindsay Copyright 2017 Booklist

The "Big Ideas Simply Explained" series now includes nine volumes, covering topics ranging from science to crime, each exploring a subject in one- to three- page-long topical bursts, accompanied by dazzling visuals. These latest volumes are bright and lively, printed on slick pages, and chock-full of photos and diagrams addressing key people and concepts. For instance, The Art Book's almost 100 entries (with additional paragraph-length notes on specific works) are organized chronologically, from cave art to well-known creations from the modern age, ending with a 2010 video piece. -VERDICT Engaging topic overviews for teens and adults alike, with enough detail to guide curious readers toward deeper resources.
