Review by Booklist Review
It is no wonder that soccer is the world's most beloved sport and is experiencing a surge in popularity in the U.S.: it's a recreational activity steeped in tradition, and boasting legendary players. Facts, figures, trivia, rules, player profiles, and superlatives are all included in this comprehensive volume for both avid fans and those new to the sport. From the basic (e.g., the meaning of referee signals) to the obscure (e.g., the tale of the 2015 game in Switzerland that had to be called off due to thousands of frogs taking over the field), readers of all interest levels will learn something new about the game. The pages devoted to explaining the different clubs in Europe and the Americas are particularly helpful, utilizing dynamically formatted lists and maps. The visual appeal of the book is undeniable for middle-level readers, with catchy page titles and chunks of information punctuated with illustrations and photographs.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2016 Booklist
