101+ Careers in Public Health offers a resource for all those interested in pursuing--or shifting directions within--a career in public health. After publishing the first edition in 2011 (CH, Apr'11, 48-4224), Selzer, a practicing public-health physician, gives an updated overview of the multidisciplinary field and then discusses a great variety of possible lines of work in the public-health arena. Careers featured include traditional ones such as epidemiologist, but also less-obvious roles such as dementia services program coordinator or consultant to various e-health and informatics systems. The author explores the challenges of the work and the types of degrees and skills needed. Dozens of professionals in the workforce describe their career paths and work environment. A new section discusses the value of an MPH versus an MD degree and addresses the realistic concerns of medical school debt. Another new section offers advice from career counselors on trends in the job market, networking, and interviewing. The global health chapter has been expanded, language finessed (e.g., "bioterrorism researcher" is now "biodefense researcher"), some jobs moved to more appropriate categories, and new chapters added about careers in the military and aging services. Public health changes at a rapid pace and at the publisher's affordable price, the new edition is well worth the upgrade. Summing Up: Recommended.
