Accessible and attractive, the United States of America series presents a volume on each state as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The two- and four-page chapters have practical titles, such as Cities, Geography, Natural Resources, and Transportation. Each book's subtitle is one of that state's nicknames, while the others appear on the useful double-page spread of Quick Facts, along with the capital, motto, population, number of U.S. senators and representatives, and so on. The many well-chosen illustrations include colorful photos, maps, and period paintings and prints. Throughout each book, Hamilton does a good job of showing what makes that state different from the others by pointing out distinctive features, from the state's climate and history to the cultural and sports activities that people enjoy there. In Alaska, the text discusses the state's expansive geography and touches on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Well organized for school reports, the books also provide useful background information for young people traveling in the area.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2017 Booklist

This boilerplate series provides adequate and level-appropriate overviews of states. In each book, templated sections on geography, climate and weather, plants and animals, history, people, cities, transportation, natural resources, industry, sports, and entertainment are well illustrated with engaging photographs; "Quick Facts" and "Did You Know?" sections provide extra information. The flashy design includes lots of stars and stripes. Timeline. Glos., ind.
