With Art Deco -Sculpture, Duncan, the author of numerous books on art deco, art nouveau, and other decorative arts, delivers a lavishly illustrated, comprehensive tome. Using his expertise as an independent consultant on the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th century, the author traces the emergence of the art deco style and the influences on its development into the middle of the 20th century. There are over 800 illustrations of sculptures, from the decorative to the architectural from all corners of the world. Also included are biographical sketches of 50 sculptors. Enjoyable for the hundreds of illustrations, this book is not an easy read, language and content leans more toward the academic. For a more easily digested and enjoyable overview of art deco style, Miller's Art Deco: Living with the Art Deco Style is recommended. Miller has researched the influences and development of the art deco movement and delivers it in a much simpler and straightforward style. The comprehensive subject matter discusses the origins and influences of the style with illustrations that cover all aspects of decorative arts including architecture, furniture, ceramics, metal works, textiles, and posters. In this book, you will find the more iconic images associated with art deco. Miller is one of the leading experts in the field of antiques and is most closely associated with the Miller's Antiques Price Guide, which began publication in 1979. Duncan and Miller have produced complete, well-illustrated guides; both can be enjoyed for the illustrations alone, with the accompanying history as icing on the cake. -VERDICT These titles are well worth reading, but Miller's book is more affordable and written for the layman.-Sandra Knowles, South Carolina State Lib., -Columbia © Copyright 2017.
