Review by Booklist Review

The cover may skew young, but this informative book is written for middle-grade readers as it relates the history of food production and the agricultural dilemmas associated with it, using colorful illustrations and plentiful infographics. Beginning with a food literacy quiz, this recounts the history of food, traveling from prehistoric hunters to the 1700s Agricultural Revolution to the 1940s Green Revolution in developing countries. Reaching modern days, it discusses the prevalence of fast food and the continual threat of world hunger. The book shows how food production affects the land, water, air, climate, economy, animals, plants, and the people who live there. Sidebars and infographics illustrate a number of concepts: the world's top crops, life on factory farms, GMOs versus hybrids, the science of nutrition, and foods eaten around the world. Suggestions are given on how to shop smart by buying food that is produced humanely and sustainably. Including a glossary, selected sources, further reading, and an index, it's chock-full of information, but eye-catching infographics make reading easy and fun.--Rawlins, Sharon Copyright 2017 Booklist
