Separated from his parents during a sandstorm in the Gobi Desert, Ming follows a nine-colored deer to the Mogao Caves. There the boy observes the wonders of this site: architecture, murals, sculptures, paintings, printed images, and textiles. At one point, Ming accidentally enters a mural, where he rescues a tiger and uses his paintbrush to repaint several animals' missing parts (obscured within the artwork), allowing them to move freely again. Eventually, the nine-colored deer rescues Ming from the mural, and he is reunited with his grateful parents. Li, an art teacher turned children's book creator, crafts this latest volume of Ming's adventures around an actual archaeological site (these ancient Buddhist grottoes are located in Dunhuang, China), augmenting the fictional Ming's experiences with facts about this World Heritage site and related traditional Chinese stories. The text is in both English and Chinese, and though the English translations can read a bit awkwardly in places, the site's authenticity and the traditional-style artwork make this a welcome addition to bilingual literature.--Weisman, Kay Copyright 2017 Booklist
