Review by Booklist Review

For years, the Monks of New Skete, in New York State, have mixed dog training with contemplative living. In their latest offering, coauthored with trainer Goldberg, they delve into the psyche of dogs to determine what exactly dogs need and how their owners can supply it. Today's owners, the authors concede, have multiple demands on their time, and their pets, though loved, are often left alone. As descendants of wolves, dogs are pack animals who are happiest when they can follow a leader who supplies them with food, fun, and structure. Brother Christopher and Goldberg take turns relating stories of troubled dogs and their training. These examples add warmth to the rules of being a good pack master and will help readers identify problem areas. The main lesson here seems to be that humans are humans and dogs are dogs, and the sooner everyone embraces his role, the happier everyone will be. This mix of philosophy and practical tips will help owners build a stronger bond with their animals to curb unwanted behaviors.--Smith, Candace Copyright 2017 Booklist
