Mermaid sisters Golden and Silver are hunting human prey when they encounter a rock band partying on a desolate Polish shore. Quickly developing mutual attraction, the sisters accompany their new friends to the seedy nightclub where the band regularly performs. Intrigued by the possibilities, the venue owner signs the fantastic siblings to create performances with the musicians, believing that audiences will become entranced by the sirenlike call of their voices in harmony. These bold new currents of opportunity soon become turbulent: Golden gives in to her natural impulses to feast on human hearts while navigating temptation in an offer to sing with another landlocked briny denizen's hard rock act, and Silver contemplates surgery to remove her tail to make herself acceptable to a blond hunk who rejects her half-aquatic heritage. VERDICT The Lure sets sail for delightfully unique waters, melding ancient legend, magical realism, and the unfettered emotionality of the musical format to concoct a fish tale both wondrous and eerie that superbly blends high drama with the otherworldly mystery of the fantastic.-Douglas Rednour, Georgia State Univ.
