*Starred Review* Our heroine, resplendent in a yellow crown, has one great love: cats! And the cats she loves act very much like children: they are wiggly and giggly; they swing from poles and dance on ceilings. There are all kinds of cats in her bustling city full of tall buildings and busy people fat cats, scaredy cats, and cool cats. There are cats on your head and cats in bed, cats that wink and cats that think. Whatever the cat, she loves it. While the pictures are full of action, and even the hard lines of the city are playfully slanted, there is an occasional pattern in the designs that creates some order, and a rhythmic, repetitive text that provides even more structure. Staake's cartoon characters are all eyes, and the raucous illustrations add energy to the story, while the simple-to-grasp text encourages participation from young readers. The cats themselves, depicted in bright, unexpected hues, absolutely steal the show, while our unnamed brown-skinned heroine, happily along for the ride, often peeks around corners or from windows. This is a celebration of felines with a subtle adoption message. PreS-K-Cat lovers unite! Those who adore feline friends will rejoice in this whimsical title for young children. There is not much in way of a plot, as the purpose is more for decoding words and objects (think One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss), but who cares! Staake has a deft touch for creating expressive and animated cats, favorites including the "scaredy cats," "prancing cats," and "snuggling cats." -VERDICT Children who love cats will not be disappointed with this fun picture book filled with plenty of cat-titude! In rhyming text, a girl enthusiastically highlights the different types of cats she sees in her city. "Big cats, little cats. Thin cats, fat cats"--she loves them all! Ultimately, the young cat fancier receives her own kitten.
