Review by Library Journal Review

Unable to work while recuperating from a heart attack, a 59-year-old Newcastle carpenter (Dave Johns) jumps through depersonalized bureaucratic hoops only to have his unemployment benefits denied. Despite the mounting toll on his dignity, the military veteran and recent widower assists a single mother (Hayley Squires) and her two kids dealing with their own desperate financial circumstances. Ken Loach (The Wind That Shakes the Barley) shows his empathy for the working class in this scathing critique of the welfare system and its consequence for a proud man.
