Modern urban landscapes Creating energy-efficient designs

Book - 2017

Introduces advanced design concepts and international standards for SMART Landscape design. SMART Landscape' is a significant contribution to the conversation on sustainable landscape design, providing energy efficient models and water saving landscape ideas. There are many factors that would help realise energy efficient landscapes, including (but not limited to) the use of energy saving lamps, such as LED; the integration and adoption of renewable energy, including solar-powered and wind-powered landscape lighting; energy-efficient landscape design, particularly through the correct placement and selection of shade trees, and the creation of wind breaks. This book shows techniques for creating landscapes that also save water, for exam...ple by choosing correct planting materials; reducing stormwater run-off through the use of bio-swales, rain gardens and green roofs and walls; reducing water usage in landscapes through best-practice water-wise garden techniques, including irrigation using grey water. Permeable paving materials can also help to reduce stormwater runoff and allow rainwater to infiltrate into the ground and replenish groundwater rather than run into surface water systems.

Review by Library Journal Review

This global survey of urban landscapes whose designers were able to minimize energy and water use draws upon the expertise of editor Coyle, a landscape architect based in Perth, Australia. The book begins with an essay about becoming more energy-efficient in landscaping, breaking out into sections explaining the application of automatic irrigation technology, intelligent illumination and lighting, wind power, solar electric power, rainwater recycling and management, soil improvement and water saving, as well as maintenance-reducing technology. Each chapter consists of an essay and several examples of projects such as parks and gardens. Each example comprises a brief introductory text and six to 12 pages of drawings and color photographs. Projects include city neighborhoods, planned towns, municipal parks, schoolyards, and campuses. Most are located in Europe or Asia. VERDICT Despite some minor errors in the text and captions, overall this book is informative, showing that energy-efficient design is applicable to diverse urban landscapes. The documentation of these innovative places may prove inspiring to landscape architects, urban planners, and engineers.-David R. Conn, formerly with Surrey Libs., BC © Copyright 2017.
