In the far north, little Pikiq and his friends Kri the crow and Bou the snowy owl find an abandoned box. Inside are colored pencils, paper, paint and paintbrushes, and a book. Pikiq immediately sets to work drawing all the exotic trees and animals on the pages. When he runs out of paper, he continues to paint on the snow! Later, snuggled under a vivid patchwork quilt in his igloo, Pikiq dreams about amazing trees and animals. With his two companions, he sees colorful birds flying through a herd of caribou's antlers, upside-down trees, and a ghostly forest of elephants. Building a kayak of banana leaves, the three fly into the sky and catch the moon. Not only is this an exciting dream experience but Pikiq's lively enthusiasm also captures the joy of color, artwork, and imagination. Colombian artist-illustrator Yayo takes readers on a vivid journey as he playfully depicts fantastic creatures with explosive hues. His boldly colored acrylic paintings create a fanciful atmosphere superimposed on the bleak, snowy north.--Gepson, Lolly Copyright 2017 Booklist

After young Pikiq of the Far North finds a box in the snow containing art supplies, he uses the snow as his canvas. The next morning, he wakes to find his world full of surreal, color-drenched scenes (e.g., a sleeping giant overgrown with grass); apparently, it was all a dream. This French picture book's illustrations are individually gorgeous but lack narrative significance. (c) Copyright 2019. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
