Westfront 1918

DVD - 2018

G.W. Pabst brought the war movie into a new era with his first sound film, a mercilessly realistic depiction of the nightmare that scarred a generation, in the director's native Germany and beyond. Digging into the trenches with four infantrymen stationed in France in the final months of World War I, Pabst illustrates the harrowing ordeals of battle with unprecedented naturalism, as the men are worn away in body and spirit by firefights, and the disillusion that greets them on the home front.

Best known stateside for his Hollywood silent pics starring Louise Brooks (Diary of a Lost Girl; Pandora's Box), Austrian director G.W. Pabst made a big noise in Europe in the sound era with this complementary pair of talkies. Westfront depicts World War I horrors from the German viewpoint in a realistic style similar to All Quiet on the Western Front but with fewer of that classic's sentimental flourishes. Comradeship among workers overcomes postwar grievances as German miners aid their trapped French counterparts in Kameradschaft. Superb restoration has rescued both films. © Copyright 2018.
