Parish (freelance pattern cutter; lecturer, Northbrook College, UK) has created an amazing book for readers interested in how fashion is created and the influences of pattern makers on fashion. This hands-on guide enables readers to work through fashion designs, both simple and complex, from the perspective of the pattern maker. In seven chapters Parish covers all aspects of the patterning process along with specific areas of the garment, including patterning fundamentals; shapes in patterning; sleeves, collars, and circles; and trousers. In this second edition (the first edition was published in 2013), Parish has added step-by-step instructions for more complex patterns and a chapter covering pockets, openings, and finishes. A final chapter educates readers on sustainability issues and solutions to patterning problems. On page 6, the author provides a useful explanation of how to use the book. Many readers will particularly appreciate the yellow "troubleshooting" boxes throughout. This book will be a great asset to beginners in learning proper patterning techniques.
