*Starred Review* Splashy, colorful pages with infographics, photos, and diagrams are packed with information in this installment in the Geo Facts series (8 titles). After an overview of resources in general, subsequent sections address specific resources, such as minerals, oil and natural gas, wood, and food. That's all to be expected, of course, but where this volume truly shines is in its accessible discussion of geopolitical and ecological considerations associated with all these resources. Howell addresses the wide gulf between wealthy and poorer nations; in particular, how poorer nations often produce the most natural resources, such as wood and minerals, but wealthier nations use the most resources by a large margin. Each spread about a resource addresses an associated problem, such as dangerous working conditions, greenhouse gas production, and natural habitat destruction, and Focus On pages highlight specific topics, such as genetically modified foods and aluminum. There's a wealth of information here, and it's thoughtfully presented in a global context. Each title opens with its subject clearly defined and follows with case studies. Earth's Resources, for example, explains the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources and, alongside an abundance of additional information, provides a more in-depth look at the mining of aluminum-rich bauxite ore, rain forest deforestation, genetically modified crops, North Sea fishing, and eco-cities. Each book does a great job pulling together and synthesizing information. Also included is a test section to review the knowledge gained.
