Jane Bunker, deputy sheriff of Hancock County, Maine, is having great success making drug busts, but the powers that be want her to back off for the summer to protect the area's lucrative tourism industry. Tasked with finding a college student from Romania in Maine on a summer work visa, and a cadet missing from the local maritime academy, Jane investigates, but she believes the two are together and will shortly turn up embarrassed and unharmed. During her investigation, she helps rescue a lobsterman whose boat she believes was deliberately sunk in a territorial dispute. Soon it looks like the cases may be connected as bodies begin to pile up. Jane connects the pieces while becoming romantically interested in a mysterious local man. Jane is a no-nonsense, principled lead who is surrounded by well-drawn, quirky secondary characters.
