Art in Chicago A history from the fire to now

Book - 2018

"For decades now, the story of art in America has been dominated by New York. Chicago, on the other hand...well, people here just get on with the work of making art. Art in Chicago is a magisterial account of the long history of Chicago art, from the rupture of the Great Fire in 1871 to the present, to Manierre Dawson, László Moholy-Nagy and Ivan Albright to Chris Ware, Anne Wilson, and Theaster Gates. The first single-volume history of art and artists in Chicago, the book - in recognition of th e complexity of the story it tells - doesn't follow a single continuous trajectory. Rather, it presents an overlapping sequence of interrelated narratives that together tell a full and nuanced, yet wholly accessible history of visual art... in the city. The result is an unprecedentedly inclusive and rich tapestry, one that reveals Chicago art in all its variety and vigor - and one that will surprise and enlighten even the most dedicated fan of the city's artistic heritage. Part of the Terra Foundation for American Art's year-long Art Design Chicago initiative, bringing major arts events to venues throughout Chicago in 2018, Art in Chicago is a landmark publication, a book that will be the standard account of Chicago art for decades to come."--Provided by publisher.

Review by Booklist Review

*Starred Review* Art in Chicago: A History from the Fire to Now is the first book to follow the flow of Chicago art from the nineteenth century to the present, and it is revelatory. Art historians Taft and Cozzolino and their expert contributors illuminate multiple dimensions of the Chicago art world, from its established institutions to its bohemian enclaves. Era by era, elements that distinguish Chicago come into focus, especially the insurgent use of art as a force for dissent, social change, and community improvement. Chicago's revolutionary variations on representational art, with a notable emphasis on the body, are also incisively tracked and analyzed; so, too, is the inclusion, right from the start, of women and people of color, and the city's often-controversial public art, including African American and Latinx street murals. Among the many artists spotlighted are Ivan Albright, Archibald Motley Jr., Evelyn Statsinger, Nancy Spero, Ray Yoshido, Christina Ramberg, Roger Brown, and Ellen Lanyon. In the final section, current Chicago art luminaries, among them Nick Cave, Theaster Gates, Faheem Majeed, Kerry James Marshall, Diane Simpson, Chris Ware, Anne Wilson, and Amanda Williams, share their experiences. Chicago art is vibrant, edgy, fantastical, and provocative, qualities vividly reflected in this vital, gorgeously produced, and enlightening history.--Donna Seaman Copyright 2018 Booklist
