Daniela Pirata is a determined young lady. Nothing will stop her from reaching her goal of becoming a pirata (pirate) on the dreaded Caimán Negro. Daniela and her sidekick, Mono, search the rough seas on her trusty boat, Arana Saltarina, until they come face-to-face with Captain Orejacortada, who has a few pirate tests for our heroine. To the amazement of the other pirates, Daniela passes every test. Unfortunately, the captain thinks girls cannot be pirates. Too late: the other pirates disagree and make Orejacortada walk the plank, welcoming Daniela as their new leader. Written entirely in Spanish, with adjectives often emphasized in the text, Isern's book introduces some higher-level vocabulary words, which go down easy with Gómez's bright, rollicking illustrations. A great read-aloud choice.--Rosie Camargo Copyright 2018 Booklist
