Review by Library Journal Review

The American daughter (Ingrid Bergman) of a convicted Nazi spy falls for the U.S. intelligence officer (Cary Grant) assigned as her handler for a mission to report on the associates of her target (Claude Rains), a Nazi industrialist hiding out in Rio de Janeiro. Hitchcock's 1946 romantic espionage thriller established a benchmark for the "Master of Suspense" with its intricate camera work, Production Code-flouting kissing scene, and morally problematic theme. Part of the National Film Registry, Notorious greatly benefits from a high-definition restoration and a trove of extras, including new interviews with cinematographer John Bailey, Hitchcock biographer Donald Spoto, and film scholar David Bordwell. VERDICT Replace older copies of this classic from Hollywood's Golden Age. [See Trailers, LJ 12/18.]--Jeff T. Dick, Davenport, IA
